This notice explains, plainly, what the Citation Verifier does and does not tell you. It forms part of our Terms of Service, and sections 4, 5, 16 and 17 of those Terms apply in full.

This is not legal advice

We are not a law firm. We do not practise law. Nothing this tool produces is legal advice or a legal opinion, and using it creates no lawyer-client relationship.

We certify nothing

No result means your document is correct, complete, accurate, compliant, or safe to file. We issue no certification, approval or clearance of any kind. There is no result this tool can return that means "you're fine."

You still have to check everything yourself

Your professional duty to verify your own authorities is yours alone. It cannot be delegated to software, and using this tool does not reduce, satisfy or share it.

This tool is meant to be used in addition to your own checking — never instead of it.

What each result actually means

CONFIRMED — we found a case at that citation, and the details we could compare matched. It does not mean the case says what your document claims, that you have cited it correctly, that it supports your argument, or that it is still good law.

NOT FOUND — we did not find a case at that citation in the sources we searched, at the moment we searched them. It is not a finding that the citation is false, fabricated or invented. There are many innocent explanations: gaps in source coverage, unreported or unpublished decisions, sealed matters, formatting differences, a typo, indexing delays, or a jurisdiction we do not cover.

Please do not treat a NOT FOUND result as evidence that anyone has done something wrong. Check it against the official record yourself.

AMBIGUOUS — we found a case, but something we compared did not match. Look at it.

UNSUPPORTED — the citation is outside what we cover. We have not checked it at all.

What we do not check

• Whether a case has been overruled, reversed, distinguished, appealed or superseded. This tool is not a citator. It will happily confirm a case that is no longer good law.
• Whether the case supports the proposition you cite it for
• Quotations, pinpoint cites, page numbers, or parentheticals
• Anything about the substance, merits or weight of an authority

Citations we miss

We may fail to detect a citation in your document — particularly in scanned documents with no machine-readable text, unusual formats, or citation styles we do not recognise.

A citation we did not detect simply does not appear in the results. Its absence is not a statement that your document does not contain it. We also apply limits on document size and citation count; where a limit is reached, results may cover only part of your document.

Our sources have gaps

We check against public case-law databases run by other organisations. Their coverage is incomplete, varies enormously by jurisdiction and court, contains errors, and changes without notice. We do not control them.

There is no jurisdiction where coverage is complete.

Results reflect only what a source contained at the moment we queried it. Nothing is monitored or updated afterwards.

Provided as-is

The Services and all results are provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We do not warrant that results are accurate, complete or current. Our liability is limited as set out in section 17 of the Terms of Service.

If a result matters, check it against the official record. That is what this tool is for — prompting the check, not replacing it.
